The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Comparative Medicine, in Hershey, PA is seeking a part time animal caretaker. This position will observe sheep and calves in an intensive care setting. Monitor animals with artificial organs and associated equipment; notify veterinarian or on-call engineer of concerns. Under veterinary staff direction, use proper aseptic techniques to administer medications orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously and intravenously; draw up, dilute, or mix medications at the proper levels; monitor vital signs for abnormal conditions. Collect blood, urine, and fecal samples; conduct diagnostic tests as directed including blood gases, hematocrits, clot times, etc. Maintain records of animal data, vitals, medications, intake and output, etc.; follow orders written by veterinary staff and supervisor. Restrain, position, and prepare animals for medical/research procedures. Assist with veterinary treatments and activities as directed. Operate blood pressure monitors, fluid pumps, etc.; notify veterinary staff or supervisor of malfunctions. Maintain a stock of regularly used supplies; request additional supplies to replenish inventory, as necessary. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition; keep animals in clean state; promptly remove animal waste. Attend technician meeting and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care, research and uses of animals in biomedical research. Requires the ability to work as part of an animal care team yet work independently. Being a self-starter and willing to learn new skills is a must. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation. Work requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 2-3 years of applicable experience.

Animal Facility Manager
Salus University is hiring a part-time Animal Facility Manager to work in a research vivarium. This position would be a good fit for a student or recent graduate with animal lab experience and strong organizational skills.
Primary Functions: Responsible for the management of personnel and laboratory animal care in an AAALAC-accredited vivarium.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Ensures conditions vital to the well-being and care of animals are continuously met in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, and university policies.
2. Participates in Institutional Animal Care Use Committee (IACUC) meetings as a voting member.
3. Performs and/or delegates necessary animal husbandry functions:
a. Provide feed, water, bedding and clean cages
b. Monitor and maintain environmental conditions (temperatures, humidity, light levels and ventilation)
c. Track and record relevant environmental data.
d. Observe animals daily for signs of illness or disease.
e. Perform vivarium sanitation and maintenance tasks.
