Study Tips and Successful Habits
Attend Every Class
Being present in class, paying full attention, and listening to the instructor’s comments about tests are essential for successful test-taking. If you miss a class, make sure to check with the instructor outside of class to catch up on what you missed.
Start Studying Early
Begin studying from the first day of class instead of waiting until a test is announced. Review your notes daily and look for potential test questions in your notes, quizzes, textbooks, and homework assignments. Instead of marathon study sessions, prioritize shorter and more frequent blocks of 30-40 minutes.
Study with Purpose
Study in a distraction-free environment. Study actively by moving around, stretching, and reading out loud. Studying with a group can also be beneficial.
Ask for Guidance
Ask your instructor about the types of test questions and key areas to focus on for the test. Pursue tutoring options.
Take Effective Notes
Taking effective notes is crucial for learning and test preparation. Leave plenty of room in your notes to add details from the text later. Review your notes immediately after class and on a daily and weekly basis, as well as before the test.
Record Your Notes
Many students find it challenging to listen and take notes simultaneously. Consider tape-recording the lecture (with permission) to capture the content accurately while you listen attentively or re-writing the notes you took in class in a more organized fashion.
