Manor Student Wins Statewide Practical Nursing Scholarship
Corine Baptise (Philadelphia/Olney High School) received the scholarship last month.
The Pennsylvania Association of Practical Nursing Administrators awarded Manor College freshman Corine Baptiste with a scholarship for the Fall 2024 semester.
“I was in shock,” Baptiste said. “I really wasn’t expecting it. It means a lot to me. The scholarship means I can go do what I want to do.”
Baptiste is among the students in Manor College’s inaugural Practical Nursing cohort. Baptiste, who grew up in Haiti and currently lives in Philadelphia, first discovered nursing after experiencing a large earthquake in Haiti in 2010.
“Seeing so many injured and dead people brought focus to my career aspirations,” Baptiste wrote in an essay applying for the scholarship. “I knew I would make every effort to make my nursing dream come true… Following the earthquake, there were not enough doctors and nurses to care for all who needed help. If I had been prepared at the time, I could have helped… I lost family members that day and I made a promise to myself and to them that I will work hard to achieve my goal.”
Dr. Marti Trudeau, Practical Nursing Director, said Baptiste has brought a lot to the classroom in her short time at Manor.
“She is very smart and her application was very moving,” Dr. Trudeau said. “But at the same time, she’s also fun-loving and brings that to her daily interactions.”
Baptiste said the scholarship eases the burden of her education.
“The scholarship will allow me to focus entirely on excelling in the program,” she said. “This scholarship enables me to pursue my passion and become a nurse who cares for those in need.”
