Veterinary Technician

 Laboratory Technologist- Department of Agriculture 

This position is in the Pathology group and is responsible for providing support to the diagnosticians in order to provide prompt, high-quality pathology services.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

I) Receipt of animals and specimens
A)Interview submitters in person and on the phone to obtain demographic and historical information, and provide submitters with necessary forms, documents and instructions.
B)Secure identification numbers; make appropriate logbook and/or computer entries in the appropriate laboratory information management systems (LIMS), label specimens and initiate examination documents for the specimens.

II) Processing materials
A) Collect fluid samples from live animals. Administer tranquilizing drugs and euthanasia by approved means.
B) Under the direction of a diagnostician conduct preliminary dissections, select representative portions of tissue for preservation, collect samples for examination and for storage; trim fixed tissues for histologic processing.
C) Assure that complete and accurate data are maintained in accession files for disease surveillance activities.
D) Package and ship specimens to referral laboratories for testing.

III) Pathologic incinerator and disposal of wastes
A) Dismember animal carcasses for disposal. Various types of saws, cutters and lifting equipment are used to aid this procedure.
B) Lift and manipulate 50 pounds and move 55 gallon drums with contents by the use of carts and dollies.

IV) Standard laboratory tests
A) Conduct parasitological examinations including fecal flotation, quantitative fecal egg count, sedimentation techniques for lungworms, and direct fecal smears in feces. Identify parasites and their ova.
B) Perform enzyme immunoassay, ELISA and similar tests according to SOP or manufacturer’s directions.
C) Preliminary findings may be reported directly to clients at the direction of the diagnostician.

V) Provide direct assistance to diagnosticians
A) Conduct detailed dissections according to SOP or upon direction by the diagnostician.
B) Prepare specimens for special examination upon direction by the diagnostician. (Example: expose and incise the tympanic bullae; remove the penis and incise the urethra; process pullorum reactors to collect tissues.)

VI) Laboratory sanitation
A) Maintain the mammalian and avian necropsy rooms, histology trim room, loading dock (including the outside cooler) and other areas in the custody of the pathology section in clean, sanitary and orderly condition.
B) Remove completed carcasses and tissues from the necropsy room and place them in the cooler or the incinerator for disposal.
C) Arrange for disposal of carcasses and other regulated waste as needed by contacting renderers, medical waste haulers or other carriers.
D) Clean and disinfect tools and instruments and properly store them.
E) Clean and maintain foot baths, carpets, and floors.
F) Collect and launder soiled garments.

VII) Supplies and maintenance
A) Arrange for and maintain adequate stocks of consumable supplies in the necropsy room.
B) Prepare supplies and reagents for standard laboratory tests. Assure their compliance with standards for quality.
C) Perform adjustments and minor maintenance on equipment.

VIII) Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
A) The employee is responsible for duties related to the laboratory’s quality system. The quality system includes all aspects of compliance with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians’ Requirements for Laboratory Accreditation.
B) Conduct work according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and document results accordingly.
C) Observe appropriate aspects of quality control and quality assurance. Maintain records and logbooks adequate to trace the flow of specimens through the laboratory.
D) Writes,reviews and modifies SOPs as needed as related to this position.

IX) Miscellaneous duties and responsibilities
A) Alternate assignments may be arranged in order to provide temporary coverage in other areas of the lab.
B) Trains other personnel to perform these duties when needed.
C) In the case of a high consequence disease outbreak, employees who have susceptible species at the property they reside, can be required to isolate themselves from interaction with susceptible species at home or venues outside of their work duties for a time period as determined by best current science and department guidelines.
D) Performs other work related to this class as required.

An equivalent combination of experience and training which included one (1)
