Veterinary Technologist: Staff & Executive – Research Support (Laboratory/Non-Laboratory)

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Technologist (VT) for the ORACMR unit. This position is under the direct supervision of the Veterinarian. The Veterinary Technologist performs routine veterinary care and support including, but not limited to: animal exams, dental prophylaxis, collection of biological samples, basic surgical procedures, etc. on a wide variety of species. Additionally the VT administers medications/treatments to affected animals throughout the University.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Provides technical support to the veterinarians in caring for a wide range of animal species.
• Performs a broad range of duties typical of both a veterinary clinical care and research setting.
• Performs treatment, diagnostic laboratory procedures, and necropsy.
• Keeps records and does rodent breeding and colony management.
• Assists in or perform surgery and trains, observes and monitors research personnel.

The core purpose of the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) is to advance Rutgers preeminence in research and spur economic growth. ORED provides services university wide to support the faculty’s research and strategically leads the university’s economic development activities. ORED’s functions range from supporting the identification of new research funding opportunities and submission of grants proposals to post-award financial management and research regulatory affairs. The office directs research commercialization, including patenting and licensing, and serves as a central point for industry access.

Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science; Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Plus two (2) years’ experience in a laboratory or animal care facility preferably including work in both small animal veterinary practices and the animal research environment.
• Individual must become AALAS certified, at minimum, at the LAT level within the first year of employment.

• Good interpersonal and organizational skills
• Computer literate; word processing and spread sheets.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey for business demands.
• Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers, which requires a pre-placement medical evaluation.
• Must undergo criminal background check in order to work with controlled substances (e.g. narcotics, barbiturates)

Preferred Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science.
• Certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician in another state is desirable. (New Jersey does not license or certify veterinary technicians)
• Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at any of level of animal technician (ALAT, LAT, LATg)
• Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of farm animal species.
