Anne Knop

Anne Knop at Manor CollegeMeet Anne Knop!

What’s your position here at Manor?

Senior Associate Professor of Philosophy

What’s the best part about your job?

Teaching, advising, being part of a great community.  Teaching because I love to see students getting excited about important ideas that first seem abstract and out there, but are really very practical.  Creating opportunities for students to open their minds, to develop and share ideas, to debate different points of view with respect and kindness, and to appreciate the importance of taking time for thinking, is wonderfully gratifying.  The best compliment I ever receive is when a student says to me, “My brain hurts after your class!”   Advising because nothing is more fulfilling than seeing someone first recognize and then reach their best potential. I have seen some wonderful success stories over the 36 years I have been at Manor, and I truly believe those happen because of the kind of supportive learning atmosphere we provide at Manor. And Manor has always had great people who support each other; I’ve formed long lasting friendships here.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in the great city of Baltimore.  Taught by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in elementary school (St. Anthony of Padua) and high school (The Catholic High School of Baltimore). Tough and demanding teachers, but from them I acquired great learning habits.  And, I can even do most math without a calculator!

What college did you go to? What was your major?

Loyola in Maryland, then Villanova for grad school.  I switched majors in college from philosophy to French, and then back to philosophy.  I was considering going to law school, but philosophy won my mind and heart.

What’s something no one knows about you?

I am a not-so-secret hummingbird fanatic who spends way too much time planting hummingbird-attracting plants in my backyard.  Lucky for the hummingbirds that my dog, Tucker, only hunts squirrels, rabbits, mice, and moles, and leaves the birds alone.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

I’ve been working since I was 14 (48 years – you do the math).  To help pay bills while in college, I worked for the postal service in Baltimore, sorting and delivering mail.  After I graduated from Loyola and before I went to grad school, I taught religion during the day for 3 years at Seton High School in Baltimore, and worked as a bartender during the evenings at a hotel frequented by Hopkins’ professors, professional sales people, firefighters, and even a longshoreman!  Best conversations ever.

One more fact (philosophers have a hard time keeping their answers brief):   I have been teaching here at Manor longer than any other current faculty member, since fall 1980.

What are your hobbies?

Besides reading, gardening, birding, watching all sorts of films, binge watching good quality shows like House of Cards (I am currently revisiting Six Feet Under, one of my all-time favorites), I enjoy keeping in touch with and spending time with my wonderful family and friends.  I’m spending Father’s Day weekend in Austin, Texas, with my best friend and husband, Al, and my wondrous daughter, Amy, who lives there.  Oh, and I also shop.

What’s your favorite food?

It changes frequently, but right now I am obsessed with anything lemon.

John Krebs

John KrebsMeet John Krebs!

What’s your position here at Manor?

Institutional Research. This means I deal with keeping track of where we are as an institution, how we compare with the outside, and how well we are following certain rules that are established by governments and accreditation associations.

What’s the best part about your job?

I love the people and the place, and the endless nature of looking at things.

There are few absolute answers in the stuff that I look at, usually just moments in time that are “snapshots” of what is going on. There are many ways to look at questions, and the best answers always generate more and better questions.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Pittsburgh in the seventies, which of course made me an eternal Steeler fan, but I’ve been in the Philadelphia area for the last 30 years. (And I have really, really tried to become an Eagles fan, but can never quite hit that mark. I’m just not tough enough to manage that level of disappointment.)

What college did you go to? What was your major?

Slippery Rock University; Indiana University of Pennsylvania; The University of Pennsylvania; Temple University; Montgomery County Community College–in that order. School junkie. History; Education; Business.

What’s something no one knows about you?

When I graduated from high school, I hated the idea of going to college. I wanted to get a job in the mill, live at home (initially), buy a Corvette, and maybe some day get married to Patty Lodovico. My aunt convinced me to do something else. Ended up going to college, to the Peace Corps, and then endless college. (BTW, Patty never knew….)

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

I listen to musical theatre at the gym. And I have an astounding 3 Facebook friends (one of which is not a person).

What are your hobbies?

Restoring my 1972 Honda CB 350 motorcycle. When I’m done I might change my hobby to restoring my bank account.

My first year of college, I attended a school called Florida Institute of Technology to study to become a commercial pilot–in this context, I flew small Cessna single engine planes. My classmates and I rendered the Florida airspace “unsafe” for humanity (I say this with tongue firmly in cheek!).

Alex Leyva

Alex Leyva at Manor CollegeMeet Alex Leyva!

What’s your position here at Manor?

I am the Admissions Office Manager and Database Coordinator

What’s the best part about your job?

Everything! But I thrive on being able to set the platform for others to succeed in my team, and in this case, for the other departments as well. My first job had very high standards for product presentation, manufacturing practices, traceability, organization, innovation, and customer service. I’ve kept those standards for my work ethic and that’s what I’m bringing to Admissions. I also like helping with whatever is needed even if it’s not in my job description.

Where are you from?

I was born in Mexico City, but I grew up in Philadelphia.

What’s something no one knows about you?

I’ll tell you something few people know. I’m actually pretty shy, but working in the corporate world forced me out of my shell. I had to meet lots of people, so I learned to open up and become more social. Once, one of the directors told me, “You don’t have to be best friends with everyone, but just remember that good manners and a smile go a long way.”

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

I played in concert orchestras at The Mann Center and The Kimmel Center. My third grade teacher “voluntold” me to play violin. I didn’t speak much English then so I always said yes to her. Little did I know it would lead to that. They were fantastic experiences I’ll never forget.

What are your hobbies?

My favorite is reading. I instantly transport myself to the world in the book and that helps me relax. I love taking pictures and editing them on my apps to post, share, or print. I like studying other languages (I studied Japanese for a bit and now I’m working on German. I hope to one day be fluent in 4!) I like volunteering to work with the kids at my church, and I am also a concert and sports junkie (I’ve learned to balance both #DontAskWhatHappened).

What’s your favorite food?

I really like all kinds of food. A lot of my friends are from different countries so I’ve had my fair share of exposure to food from around the globe, but there’s no denying that I will choose Mexican food over everything else (especially homemade tacos!)

What’s one thing you’d like to do within the next five years?

I’d like to go base-jumping. I met a guy a while back who did it in Switzerland and he showed me his jump video. The moment I finished watching it, I instantly imagined myself doing it too. I’d like to do that and other reckless things that might require a parachute.

I am the Dean of Students.

What’s the best part about your job?

The best part about my job is watching students become great leaders. Many students come to college not realizing that this is a time to redefine themselves. I love watching leaders emerge from a student who did not know that their inner self was so amazing.

I once appeared on an episode of Cake Boss when Buddy the Baker made a cake for a zombie themed party in Asbury Park, NJ and I was on an episode of Samantha Brown’s Samantha’s Great Weekends when she came to visit the roller derby team I played for in 2010. What’s your position here at Manor?

Manager of Security and Information

What’s the best part about your job?

There are a lot of great things about my job. I would say the best and most important part would be the daily interaction with our students, faculty and staff, and making sure they are safe and feel safe on campus. Also, working with our outstanding Public Safety staff on a daily basis and admiring their dedication to the Manor community.

That’s a great question. Professionally, I would like to see our Public Safety Department continue to grow and expand upon the service and professionalism that has made Manor one of the safest, if not the safest college in the State of Pennsylvania. Believe it or not, I have seen some colleges and universities picking up on this kind of curriculum.

What’s your favorite food?

Truly, I don’t have a favorite.  I enjoy variety and new things. Just tried quinoa the other day for the first time.
